Abstract
844,245. Rocket motors. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 13, 1957 [Feb. 24, 1956], No. 5923/56. Classes 9(1) and 9(2). A rocket motor comprises a casing, a first solid propellent charge secured therein in gastight manner to prevent continuous flow of gas between the casing and the outer surface of the charge, a second charge spaced from the first on the side remote from the outlet in the casing for propellent gas, each charge being adapted to be ignited so as to generate propellent gas in the space between them, a transfer tube for directing propellent gas to said outlet and positioned in a bore in the first charge to receive gas generated in the space between the charges, a clearance being provided between the tube and bore to permit equalisation of pressure on both sides of the first charge, each charge having ignition preventing means on part of its surface whereby as the charges burn the displacement of the centre of gravity of the system defined by the two charges does not exceed an allowable maximum and igniting means for igniting said charges. In the arrangement shown in the figure the propellent charges 5, 6 are arranged inside a cylindrical casing 1 with their ignition surfaces facing each other and are coated with ignition inhibiting material on their other surfaces. The charge 6 is secured to the casing bymeans of a charge locating ring 11 provided with a flange 13 engaging a groove in the charge and screwed to an end plate 3 of the casing. A gas-transfer tube 17 is secured in a gas tight manner to the wall of an aperture in the end plate 3 and extends through a bore in the charge 6 and is provided at its inner end with an ignition device 18. The transfer tube communicates with the nozzle of the motor (not shown) and may be formed integrally with it. The Provisional Specification describes another embodiment wherein a single propellent charge is employed and is arranged to burn simultaneously from opposite ends towards the middle. The charge is supported within its casing by means located around its middle, the support also constituting or incorporating obturation means. Gas from the forward end of the charge passes through a transfer tube towards the rear end of the casing which is provided with a common outlet for the gases from both ends of the charge to the motor nozzle.
