Abstract

843,668. Winding yarns. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Nov. 8, 1957 [Nov. 13, 1956], No. 34924/57. Class 120 (2). [Also in Group XVI] An apparatus for drawing fibres or filaments, comprises means for forming the fibres into a strand, and collecting the strand into a wound package on a flexible tube supported on a rotating collet and is characterized in that the surface of the collet is made up of a plurality of segments radially movable with respect to and loosely retained on the body of the collet, and that the segments constitute a substantially continuous cylindrical surface so as to engage uniformly and thereby support the inner surface of the flexible tube. As shown, a bracket 15 supports a spindle 16 by means of a bearing 21. The body 24 of the collet is held on the spindle 16 against a tapered enlargement 26 by a lock nut 27. The body 24 has twelve longitudinal grooves 30 of dovetail cross-section. Each groove has a converging part 31 terminating in a narrow parallel sided portion 32. A T-shaped segment 34 extends the full length of each groove 30. The segments have straight sided neck portions 37 engaging portions 32 and joining a curved outer portion with a flared base 35. The segments are retained in the grooves by a head piece 40 and a collar 43, while a flat spring 46 presses each of the segments outwardly. In operation, a tube 12 is fitted over the collet, thereby depressing the segments 34 against the tension of springs 64. Material to be wound on the tube e.g. glass fibre, is then attached to the tube and the spindle 16 set in operation, e.g. through a clutch, not shown. As the speed of the spindle is increased the segments 34 are projected outwardly by centrifugal force, thereby applying pressure against the inner wall of the tube 12. In a modification, (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) the segments are of C-shaped cross-section instead of T-shaped.
