Abstract

<PICT:0798172/IV (a)/1> The apparatus of the parent Specification (wherein viscose is extruded through a spinning nozzle which is immersed in a coagulating bath and the filaments are drawn through a straight tube which is immersed in the bath, the inlet of the tube being at most 3 cm. distance from the nozzle and the axis of the tube being in line with the centre of the nozzle and with the take-up position on a winding device by means of which the filaments are drawn through the tube) is modified in that the spinning nozzle is a spinneret mounted in a housing so that the face of the spinneret forms a continuous, substantially flat surface with the face of the housing, the face of the housing extending radially from the periphery of the spinneret face for an appreciable distance, which is preferably at least equal to the diameter of the spinneret. As shown, the apparatus of the parent Specification is modified by fitting over the spinneret end of the coupling 11 an annular adapter cap 18 of polyethylene or similar plastic material to complete the housing for the spinneret. The cap 18 encircles the spinneret and has a face 181 forming a continuous flat surface with the face of the spinneret. The flared inlet of the glass spinning tube used according to the parent Specification is replaced by an inlet member 21 of moulded plastic adapted to fit snugly over the end of the constant diameter straight glass tube 20. A plastic set-screw 22 holds the inlet member 21 in place. The inlet member 21 has a flat face and the axial cylindrical passage through it has the same diameter as the tube 20, but the passage is so flared that its radius of curvature at its entrance is 0.4 to 1.6 times the diameter of the passage. The distance d should not exceed the internal diameter of the tube 20 and should not, in any case, exceed 3 cm. The length of the tube 20 is usually 8-50 inches and its inside diameter about 7-15 millimetres. The external diameter of the portion of the inlet 21 next to the cap 18 of the spinneret housing is at least equal to the diameter of the cap and preferably greater. The apparatus may be used for the wet-spinning of solutions other than viscose. Specifications 652,741, 652,746, 654,083 and 741,727 are referred to.
