Abstract

843,662. Tuning cavity resonators. EITELMcCULLOUGH Inc. Sept. 10, 1957 [Oct. 1, 1956], No. 28526/57. Class 40(8). [Also in Group XL(a)] In a klystron including a cavity resonator having a portion external to the envelope, a tuning plunger, movably mounted in this external portion, comprises a sieve-like portion forming part of the surface of the cavity resonator, so that cooling air may be blown through the external resonator portion. As shown, the klystron includes drift tube sections 12-15, Fig. 1, each provided with radially extending flanges to which are secured walls 22-25 which, together with tuning plungers 30, Fig. 3, and transverse walls 28, define external cavity resonator portions. Each tuning plunger comprises a concave sieve-like portion 41 secured to walls 35, 36 supported by a frame 32. Resilient fingers 39, secured to frame 32 contact walls 22, 23, 28 of the resonator. Adjustment of the tuning plunger is effected by means of shaft 43 engaging in a threaded aperture in bracket 49 and having a flange 44 rotatably received in bridge portion 33 of frame 32. The resonators are cooled by air blown through tubular duct 103, shroud 87 and the external portions of the resonators. Shroud 87 extends over the upper ends of the three resonators and is secured to plates 89, there being plates 89 on both sides of the middle resonator but only one plate adjacent each of the input and output resonators to enable couplings to be secured to the opposite sides thereof. Cooling fins 94, brazed to walls 22-25 are positioned between walls 28 and plates 89. The outer end of tubular duct 103 is supported by brackets 108, Fig. 1, secured to rods 62 which extend between the end discs 60, 61 of the magnetic circuit. This magnetic circuit includes coils 70, 75 and 80. Coil 75 is supported between collars 76 mounted on rods 62 of magnetic material and has apertures 122 to receive extensions 115 of the shafts 43 connected to the tuning doors. Plates 73, 81 and 82 of magnetic material are made in two halves so that they can be assembled around drift tube section 12 after the tube has been inserted into the remainder of the magnetic circuit. The aperture 64 in plate 60. is large enough to allow anode 10 with cooling fins 11 to pass therethrough. A radially extending flange 55 on drift tube section 15 seats in a recess formed in magnetic cylinder 65 and is secured therein by means of screws 72.
