Abstract

650,421. Velocity-modulated tubes. LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY, BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF. July 2, 1941, No. 403/43. Convention date, July 2, 1940. Divided out of 650,420. [Class 39 (i)] A pair of resonators 103, 104 are joined by a hollow structural member 109 connected to flexible wall portions 107, 108 of the resonators and providing a drift space, and means are provided for tuning the resonators by moving a portion of each of them with respect to the structural member by deformation of the respective flexible wall portions; the resonators, their flexible wall portions, and the structural member are all parts of the evacuated envelope. The tuning means shown is the toggle mechanism described in Specification 650,420. The resonators are toroidal with inwardly-dished rigid walls 128, 129. The wall 129 of the buncher resonator 104 faces the cathode structure, which is in the glass end bell 106<SP>1</SP> secured to metal extension 106, and exerts a focusing action upon the beam. The beam apertures in the resonator walls are filled with grids 130 made by bending a springy copper ribbon into a cruciform shape and springing it into the aperture. After leaving the catcher resonator 103, the beam passes to a detector structure contained in end bell 105 and comprising two grids 71, 72, Fig. 3, and final collector 33 all contained within a cylinder 70. The grids are biassed so that slow-moving electrons are prevented from passing to collector 33, and are reflected side-ways by the inclined grid 71. Two getter coils 27, 28 of zirconium are heated respectively to 400‹ C., for absorption of hydrogen, and 1700‹ C., for absorption of oxygen and nitrogen. External tuning resonators 120, 121 are described in Specification 650,443, [Group XL (b)]. Specification 523,712 also is referred to.
