Abstract

842,457. Ladders. MINISTER OF AVIATION [formerly MINISTER OF TRANSPORT & CIVIL AVIATION], SPURLING MOTOR BODIES Ltd., and CALDERWOOD, C. R. J. March 11, 1958 [March 18, 1957], No. 8762/57. Class 20(2) A step assembly for use in boarding aircraft comprises a wheeled chassis 11 on which are mounted fixed steps 12 and steps 13 which slide on an axis parallel but below the steps 12, and a platform 36 at the top of the fixed steps adjacent a step of the slidable steps. The chassis 11 is made of mild steel tubing and provided with castor wheels 17, towbar 19, legs 20 and drum brakes operated by a lever 16. The steps, which are made of extruded aluminium, have side panels 24, handrails 25 and undercut treads 27 faced with non-slip material. The steps 13 slide in guides under control of a handle 35 or lever and screw 34 and safety ratchet 37. A step indicator 38 assists alignment of the steps 13 with the platform 36. Another platform 30 at the top of the steps 13 has a floor 32 and roller cushion 33 which is extensible to the aircraft side by means of a pinion and rack situated beneath the platform 30.
