A machine for winding coils in circumferentially spaced slots radiating from the bore 14 of a laminated magnetizable machine statorcore 15 comprises a laterally extending wiredischarging nozzle 19, Fig. 1, carried by a hollow wire-feeding needle 17 to which is fixed an arm 20 connected by a spherical bearing (not shown) to a drive pin carried by one of the pintles of a double roller chain 27 or endless flexible belt disposed on two spaced equal-size parallel-shaft sprocket-wheels 28, 29, one 28 of which is rotated by means not shown; by this mechanism, for each turn of a multi-turn coil, the nozzle 19 is constrained to move linearly through the bore 14 to lay one coil side in a slot, then angularly to form one end winding then back linearly to lay the other coil side, and finally back angularly to form the other end winding. The end windings are formed, Figs. 5, 6, about two or three retractile hooks 35, 36, 44, and 351, 361, 44 at respective ends of the core 15, and the wire is pulled down, Figs. 6, 7, into the stator slots and tightened around the end windings by pins P1 ... P6 sequentially operated by actuation of respective air-pressure valves V1, V2, &c., controlling air supplies to spring-biased piston-chambers PC1, PC2, &c. When all the turns of a coil have been wound the wire is automatically cut by a blade 61 engaged with a serrated wire-gripping surface 67 of a block 66 by a rack 68, 69 and spring- biased piston chamber PC7.
