Abstract

A fibre fabric for cigarette and other filters is made by orientating spun fibres substantially in a direction in which they leave the spinneret or spinnerets, crimping the fibres, arranging them in the form of a band, applying tension to the band to partially elongate the crimped fibres and applying a bonding agent to the tensioned band so as to form a band both longitudinally and laterally coherent and wherein the fibres are fixed in an elongated state. Cellulose acetate fibres to 8 to 15 single denier and 80,000 to 100,000 total denier are given from 4 to 6 crimps per centimetre and arranged as a band 6 to 10 inches wide which is tensioned to reduce the fibre crimps to 2 to 3 per centimetre, regenerated cellulose or an aqueous solution of ethyl cellulose being then sprayed on one or both band surfaces to fuse the interminged fibres together at random points of contact and form a felted fabric from 0,75 mm. to 1 mm. thick and weighing 60 to 70 grams per sq. metre which if necessary is dried by hot air jets or infra-red rays and which has a greater stiffness axially than laterally. The fabric may be overlaid with single or multiple ply cellulose wadding on one or both sides, the combined fabric being integrated by passage through a pair of profiled rollers which may be cold or heated by electricity or steam and which give the finished product axial indented lines at a spacing of from 4 to 6 per inch. The fabric may be formed into lengths of cigarette filter plug rod by wrapping and cutting it in a conventional continuous-rod cigarette-making machine, in place of the normal tobacco rod, after bunching it by passing it through a folder.
