Abstract

837,938. Magnetic switches; contact-members for switches. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. Aug 1, 1958 [Aug. 26, 1957], No. 24927/58. Class 38 (5). A magnetically-operable contact device 10 has counterbalanced magnetic contacts 30 on non-magnetic resilient arms 25. Connectors 20 are sealed in a glass or other insulating body 22, in a base 15 and the ends 26 of the arms 25 are wrapped around and spot-welded to ends 23 of the connectors 20. A cover 43 of non-magnetic material such as silver, is welded to an annular ring 18 of the base 15 so as to form a sealed structure which may be filled with inert gas such as nitrogen. The contacts each comprise a magnetic head 31 and shank portion 32 with a magnetic counterweight ring 34. The end 37 of the shank 32 is turned outward to retain the ring 34 and secure the contact on the arm 25. The contacts may be of an iron-nickel alloy coated with non- magnetic layers of nickel 41 and rhodium 42. The arms 25 may be beryllium copper. As shown in Fig. 1, a number of devices 10 may be mounted in a housing 11 and operated by permanent magnets 14 on a rotatable shaft 12. As shown in Fig. 3, the contacts 30 are spaced from the casing 43 and magnet 14 so as to be attracted toward each other rather than to the magnet poles.
