Abstract
1,038,665. Electromagnetic interrupters. BRISTOL CO. June 24, 1963 [June 25, 1962], No. 24982/63. Heading H2B. A polarized interrupter or " chopper " has an electromagnetic shield casing 10 which extends to positions adjacent to the armature 50 and to polar members 28 which co-operate with the armature and extend into the operating coil 16 in a direction parallel with its axis. In Fig. 2 the casing is formed of two magnetic parts 10, 11, and a base 12 with a conductive barrier 21 sealed to the part 11 to form a sealed compartment for the armature and contacts and an upper compartment for the coil 16, polar members 28 and permanent magnet 14. The upper compartment may be filled with sealing compound. The permanent magnet 14 is polarized at right angles to the axis of the coil 16 and its poles engage the two polar members 28 which extend through the barrier 21 towards the armature 50. The latter has three magnetic laminations 52, 51, 51A (Fig. 4) secured together so that arms 52A of lamination 52 can be bent to set the gap between the polar members and the armature. A non-magnetic plate 47 is riveted to the armature to secure the cross members of armature support springs 42 which are clamped to connector pins 26 sealed in the base 12. A movable spring contact member 44 is clamped between a balance weight 41 and collar 46A of the plate 47. The ends of the member 44 co-operate with fixed contacts 30 on the ends of connector tubes 25 which may be elongated by squeezing at 13A to move the fixed contact 30 to set the contact spacing. A two-part magnetic shielding member 20 surrounds the contacts. Coil terminals 15 pass through the upper end of the casing 10 and tags 27 at this end of the casing may be bent toward or away from the members 28 to adjust the reluctance of the magnetic circuits. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the armature is supported by flat springs 206 riveted to a cross barrier of the casing part 211 and carries an insulated movable contact 210. In Fig. 8 (not shown) the armature 350 is formed of spring members 351, 352 welded together at the ends which extend between polar members 28. The other ends of the springs 351, 352 are secured to the base 312 and extend at 353A, 354A close to the housing shield 310. A disc 365 can be moved to alter the remanence of the magnetic circuits.
