[Also in Group XXIX] A piston and cylinder assembly for a freepiston type hydropneumatic accumulator comprises a piston 2 having a rebate in which is mounted an elastically and plastically deformable sealing ring 4 of a material which, in order that the ring may be deformed into sealing contact with the cylinder 1 by a spring 5 acting through a compressor member 6, needs to be subjected to a pressure at least equal to the maximum operating pressure in the cylinder ; further, the material of the ring has a coefficient of friction of the order of 0.05. The sealing ring 4 may be made of polytetrafluoroethylene and is formed with cross-sectional dimensions small in relation to the cylinder diameter, the spring 5 being suitably designed to load the ring so that it makes adequate sealing contact around its complete circumference. The physical properties of the material of the ring are such that when the liquid in the accumulator has been exhausted and the piston 2 abuts the cylinder head, the pressure of the gas acting on the member 6 in addition to the spring pressure does not cause the ring to be extruded between the piston and cylinder. The spring 5 acts between an abutment plate 13 retained on the piston rod 12 by a nut or circlip 14 and is located by portions 8, 9. The member 6 is located on a spigot 7 and, in order to permit freedom of angular movement, its locating diameter is radiused at 11 and its outer diameter is suitably tapered.
