Abstract

The inside of a hollow steel cylinder is lined with a harder nickel-base alloy, which has a lower melting point than the steel and whose properties are adversely affected if contaminated with iron, by charging the finely divided alloy into the cylinder, capping the cylinder ends, rotating the cylinder slowly to distribute the alloy particles longitudinally, then rotating the cylinder more rapidly to hold the particles against the inside surface over the whole circumference by centrifugal force, maintaining a non-oxidizing atmosphere in the cylinder and inductively heating the cylinder, a short annular section at a time, below the melting point of the alloy while still rotating the cylinder to sinter the alloy particles and bond them in place. In an example particles of an alloy of the composition, in per cent by weight: .Ni.65-75 .Cr.13-20 .B.2.75-4.75 impurities including Si, Fe, C up to 10 is sintered in the range 1850-1900 DEG F. in a hydrogen atmosphere.
