837,099. Change-speed gear; overload slip couplings. HOWLETT, F. H. June 4, 1956, No. 17180/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] Relates to a vehicle driving gear (see Group XXXI) having a change-speed gear output shaft 7, Fig. 2, connected to a shaft 17 which can be connected directly or through gearing to a sleeve 18 having teeth 49 meshing the wheel drive (not shown). The connection between the shaft 17 and sleeve 18 comprises a clutch member 64 splined to the shaft 17 and moved by a hand lever 73. The member 64 can be moved so that teeth 68 thereon mesh with teeth 71 of the sleeve 18 to provide the direct connection or so that teeth. 69 of the member 64 mesh with teeth 72 on a gear 58 meshing with a gear 59 on a countershaft 61 carrying a gear 62 meshing with teeth 63 on the sleeve 18 to provide the geared connection. In a modification, Fig. 4, a gear 59a meshing with the gear 58 is connected by a manually operated automatic overload clutch to a gear 62a meshing with the gear 63. The clutch comprises part 89, 91 urged into frictional engagement by springs 92, the part 91 being splined to a hollow shaft 61a. A manually operated rod 93 within the shaft 61a carries a pin 94 projecting through slots 96 in the shaft to engage the clutch part 91 for manual control.
