Abstract

In a method of producing uranium or uranium alloys by reducing a uranium double fluoride by means of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or aluminium, the previously dried uranium double fluoride is heated to a temperature between 110 DEG C. and its melting point to increase its apparent density, ground to a suitable grain size, mixed with reducing agent, the mixture is tamped to consolidate it and heated to reaction temperature in a sealed vessel. An element capable of alloying with uranium may be included in the reaction mixture, e.g. in the form of a reducible fluoride. Reduction may be initiated by heating the mixture as a whole or by a local heating. The mixture may also contain at least one substance such as iodine which itself undergoes exothermic reaction and thereby imparts heat to the mixture. In an example zinc fluoride is included in the reaction mixture. The reaction vessels may be a graphite container which is placed in a sealed metal container or it may be a sealed metal container internally coated with a refractory such as calcined dolomite, magnesium oxide or magnesium fluoride.
