Abstract

Uranium-carbon alloys, which may contain plutonium, are produced by cold compacting a mixture of uranium, carbon and, if desired plutonium powders, with or without an intermetallic compound of uranium and iron as described in Specification 914,154, and charging the compacts into a furnace at 1000-1125 DEG C., whereby the heat of reaction evolved causes the temperature of the compact to rise above the melting-point of uranium. Compaction at 60 tons/sq. inch is referred to. Specifications 821,287 and 825,041 also are referred to.
