Abstract

Coagula in the form of coherent sheets which dry quickly are prepared from aqueous dispersions of natural rubber and reinforcing fillers by controlled temperature heat treatment during coagulation and during machining of the coagula between rolls. The coagulation may be effected by the addition of a heated coagulant, or by adding a coagulant to a heated aqueous latex-filler dispersion, or by heating both coagulant and dispersion before or after admixture. Heat is applied during machining by heating the rolls and/or by spraying the coagulum with a stream of hot water. The filler may consist of lignin, carbon black, cyclized rubber, finely-divided silica, a silicate, clay, or a synthetic resin such as polymethyl methacrylate or polystyrene. In one example, a mixture of latex and a solution of lignin in caustic soda, comprising equal weights of rubber and lignin, is poured continuously into boric acid at 95 DEG to 100 DEG C. and live steam is blown through the mixture during the mixing. The co-precipitate coalesces into a gel-like coagulum, which is washed in hot water and sheeted on heated rolls.
