Abstract

836,276. Screwing-up nuts &c. CANADA CYCLE & MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan. 8, 1958 [May 14, 1957], No. 700/58. Class 83 (3). A bicycle-spoke tightening device has a number of heads 16, each having a housing 27 which is bored to receive a gear 22 driven by a reciprocating rack 24a and connected by a Hook's coupling 19 to a nipple-key 18. The gear is rotatably mounted by a neck 52 thereon engaging an end-plate 23a on the housing. The spokes are admitted through slots 36, 28 in the housing and plate 23a, and slots 30, 32, 34 extending into bores 23-25 of the gear 22, coupling 19 and key 18 respectively. Clearance for a spoke is provided by the tapered bore 33 of the gear, Fig. 4. A number of housings 27 are carried by members 14 of the mechanism 40, not described, which raises and positions the housings 27 so that spokes enter the bores 31, 23-25, and each key engages flats 20 of a nipple 15, which nipples have been assembled through the rim of a wheel and screwed loosely on to the spokes. The racks 24a are then raised by the mechanism 40 to tighten all the nipples simultaneously.
