Abstract

835,825. Forging; extruding. AJAX MAGNETHERMIC CORPORATION, [formerly MAGNETHERMIC CORPORATION]. Oct. 22, 1957 [Oct. 29, 1956], No. 32904/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXV] In order to evenly heat a thick metal billet (especially aluminium), in an induction furnace prior to forging or extruding, the furnace is automatically controlled (see Group XXXV) in two stages. In the first stage, full power is applied until the surface temperature of the billet reaches an upper limit (482‹ C.). This is higher than the temperature required for subsequent working, but not so high as to damage the billet. The surface temperature is then automatically maintained between this limit and a slightly lower temperature (474‹ C.) by intermittent energization of the furnace. This stage continues until the temperature difference between the centre and the surface of the billet falls to a first set value (28‹ C.) whereupon the datum setting of the automatic temperature control is shifted so as to maintain the surface temperature between a new top limit (465‹ C.) and the working temperature (460‹ C.). This second stage is terminated when the centre/ surface temperature difference falls to a second set value (3‹ C.). The billet is then automatically ejected from the furnace as soon as the intermittent heating allows the surface temperature to drop to the working value (460‹ C.). Specification 742,856 is referred to.
