Abstract

1,040,420. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Oct.28, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1963], No. 45589/63. Heading B3M. The temperature of a strip S before passing to the finishing stands 14-19 of a rolling mill is maintained constant by controlling the radiation losses of the strip using shields 22-24. The temperature of the strip is measured by pyrometers 33-35, and if the temperature measured at one location is, for example, below a desired figure set on a corresponding rheostat 37, 38, or 39 then the appropriate shield 22, 23, or 24 is moved to a position above the strip in order to inhibit radiation losses. Similarly, temperatures which are too high at any measuring point will cause the appropriate shield or shields to be raised clear of the strip. A shield can conveniently be heated by the leading end of a strip so that it can subsequently radiate heat to a later section of the strip. Each shield is corrugated at 42 (Fig. 2, not shown) and mounted on two pairs of parallel arms 26 for movement by a pneumatic piston and cylinder 29. The strip S is supported on driven rollers 32.
