Abstract

834,786. Screwing-up and unscrewing nuts and bolts; chucks. NORTH BAR TOOL CO. Ltd., and NEWALL & CO. Ltd., A. P. June 11, 1956 [June 29, 1955], No. 18816/55. Class 83 (3). A nut-tightening tool for use with a bolt 1, Fig. 2, forming the subject of Specification 834,787 and having a screwed shank 4 with a shearable extension 3, applies thrust differentially on the extension and on a nut screwed on the shank, and comprises a housing 51, Fig. 5, containing a nut-engaging socket 65, forming part of a crown-wheel 56, and a bolt-engaging sleeve 64 forming part of a crown-wheel 53, planet-gears 59 between the crown-wheels being mounted in a worm-wheel 60 meshing with a worm 61 on a shaft 62 which is driven. In a modification, the tool comprises a body 70, Fig. 6, housing a rotary fluid-pressure motor 72 driving, via shaft 81, the sun-wheel 91 of an epicyclic gear A, the planet-wheels 94 of which are mounted on the sun-wheel of a further gear B. Similarly, with gears C, D. The planetwheels of each gear mesh with teeth on an outer cylinder 80 which is rotatable relatively to the body and end plate 73. The nose 100 of the tool has a socket 111 for the nut and teeth 102 meshing with the cylinder teeth and fixed by screw 103. The planet-wheels of the last gear D are carried by a member 99 which supports the bolt-engaging sleeve 104 provided with wedge-shaped jaws 105. Relative turning of the sleeve and member causes lateral movement of the jaws, and such turning is ensured by a friction disc 112. The fluid supply to the motor is controlled by a valve 128 and when the motor is running, fluid is also supplied beneath a piston 127, which moves a rod 126 to the right and allows plunger 122 to press cupshaped member 115, having teeth engaging the teeth of the sun-wheel of gear D, to the right. This supply is cut off when the valve is released to stop the motor, whereupon spring 124 moves rod 126 to the left and engages sleeve 104 with member 115 via dog-teeth 118 with oblique faces, thus kicking open the jaws and releasing the sheared-bolt extension from the sleeve.
