Abstract
834,583. Differential gearing. F.W.D. CORPORATION, [formerly FOUR WHEEL DRIVE AUTO. CO.]. Aug. 27, 1956, No. 26123/56. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] A differential gear for multiple axle drive motor vehicles, comprises a pair of output shafts 22, 23, each having a bevel gear 25, 31 engaging a pinion 28 obliquely supported in a housing 27 carrying discs 39 engageable with discs 39 of a clutch cage 38 on the output shaft 32 by an hydraulically-operated piston 42 to connect one of the shafts with the housing and restrain the differential action between the shafts. A gear 18, Fig. 2, keyed to input shaft 16, drives a gear 20 fixed to a sleeve 21 encircling the rear output shaft 22. A sleeve 36, surrounding the front output shaft 32, has a bell-shaped housing 27 connected to a radial flange 54 of the sleeve 21 and supports a stub shaft 29 carrying a pinion 28 obliquely between the bevel gear 25 on the shaft 22 and a smaller bevel gear 31 on shaft 32. The torque or power is proportioned to front and rear shafts according to the size of the gears 31 and 25. For straight through drive, housing 27 is locked to shaft 32 by a friction disc clutch 35, a clutch cage being formed by a sleeve 38<SP>1</SP>, splined to the shaft 32, having a radial flange 37 from which an internally splined annulus 38 extends and supports a plate 41; clutch discs 39 extend alternately from the splined part 36<SP>1</SP> of the sleeve 36 and from the annulus 38. An annular piston 42 is forced against disc 57 by hydraulic fluid to press the discs into tight contact to lock the sleeves 36, 38<SP>1</SP> together. The hydraulic fluid is admitted to a chamber 45 at the rear of the piston 42 through a duct 48 from an annular chamber 49<SP>1</SP> defined by oil seals 51 and 52, fed from a line 55.
