Abstract

833,609. Biped mounts for mortars. HOTCHKISS-BRANDT. Dec. 20, 1957 [Dec. 28, 1956], No. 39602/57. Class 92 [Also in Group XXV] A biped mount for a mortar comprises a head 1, Fig. 1, to which are pivoted the two legs 2, a clamping collar G on the mortar tube A and releasing means F connecting the collar to the head 1, the releasing means comprising a telescpic device the extension of which causes a spring to be compresed and permitting relative movement between the collar G and head 1 when firing so as to permit the collar to move with the mortar tube when the latter recoils. The collar G is combined with a device whereby the collar is elastically and resiliently clamped on the tube with such clamping force that the collar is capable of sliding on the tube A should the recoil travel exceed the maximum travel provided between the telescopic elements of the releasing means F. In one form the collar comprises two pivoted jaws 12, 13, Fig. 5, and the head 1 is connected to the releasing means F via a training device E, the movable nut 7 of which is connected to the two inner tubes 10 of the telescopic device while the outer tubes 9 are fixed to the collar G. The two jaws 12, 13 are clamped together by engagement of a forked member 33 pivoted on the jaw 12 with the head 20 of a bolt 15 slidably mounted in a lug 22 on the jaw 13. The bolt 15 is urged away from the jaw 12 by resilient Belleville washers 25 the initial compression of which is adjusted by a nut 27. The forked member 33 is pivotally mounted on eccentric bearing faces on a shaft 29 rotatable in the jaw 12 and the arrangement is such that after the forked member 33 has been engaged with the head 20 of the bolt 15, a lever is moved to rotate the shaft 29 thus causing the member 33 to move downwardly and putting the washers 25 under further compression. The maximum elastic clamping is obtained when the axis Y of the eccentric bearing faces passes below the rotational axis X of the shaft 29 through the lower dead-centre position, in which position the operating lever 30, Fig. 6 (not shown) bears against the jaw 12. In another embodiment, the releasing means is modified and the collar is a one-piece flexible strap G<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 11, riveted at one end to the releasing means F<SP>1</SP> and having a thrust member 57 riveted at the other end. The member 57 receives the force exerted by a screw 58 engaged in a nut 59 forming part of a fork 60 of steel or other resilient material, the two arms of the fork being pivoted at 61 on a lug 53 on the releasing means. Owing to the resilience of the fork 60, the clamping force is elastically yieldable.
