Abstract
833,424. Moulding airscrew &c. de-icing overshoes. ROTOL Ltd. April 30, 1956 [May 3, 1955], No. 12855/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XI and XXXIII] A method of making an electrical de-icing airscrew &c. overshoe comprises placing on a rigid former consecutive layers of (a) cured rubber with high electrical insulative qualities, (b) a thin coating of curable rubber composition, (c) an electrical resistance heating mat impregnated with curable rubber, (d) at least partly cured rubber, coated, next to the mat, with curable rubber composition and applying to the assembly an external mould member and raising the temperature to cure the uncured rubber in the assembly. In an example, the recess 25 of a former 24 is covered by a rubber sheet 26 and the surface of the sheet is coated with a layer of rubber cement, a prepared heating mat 1 is then placed on the sheet 26 and covered by a further sheet 27, the underside of which is coated with a rubber cement. A flexible external mould member 28 is then applied and the assembly, covered with a wrapping of hessian 32, is inserted into a curing bag 33 which is placed in an autoclave and the air exhausted from the assembly through a connected 34 in the curing bag 33. Steam at 30 p.s.i. to 35 p.s.i. is then admitted to the autoclave to effect the curing process. The overshoe may have a metal leading edge protecting pipe which may be bonded to its exterior during the curing process, may be attached to its surface after curing, or may, in the form of a perforated plate or gauze be incorporated as an intermediate layer in the overshoe.
