Abstract

599,617. Electrically-heated deicing devices. NEWTON, E. P. (Scientific & Industrial Research, Honorary Advisory Council for). Dec. 28, 1944, No. 36031. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group V] A method of forming a laminated de-icing electric heating pad 1 for aircraft propellers comprises mounting its component layers, formed of materials requiring curing or vulcanizing such as rubber or synthetic resins, on a propeller-shaped former 2, covering with a pre-formed flexible sheet 7 of rubber or metal over which is placed a rubber bag 8 having its edges sealed to the supporting, base 6 by bars 9 and clamps 10, the whole assembly then being subjected to heat and pressure as, for example, in a steam pressure chamber to shape and cure the pad. The shaped heating pad is bonded to the propeller with a neoprene cement cured in situ by passing electric current through the heating layer 4 which includes carbon black. Alternatively, the propeller itself may constitute the former, the curing and bonding operation being performed simultaneously. Specification 599,616 is referred to.
