Abstract

833,087. Spray and pulverulent fuel burners. PETRO-CHEM PROCESS CO. Inc Aug. 29, 1957 [Oct. 4, 1956], No. 27217/57. Class 75(1) A heavy liquid fuel or pulverulent fuel burner with an atomizer nozzle 12 discharging a spray into a venturi passage, normally discharging at the throat 15 thereof, and with air entering at the remote end of the venturi passage and the combustible air/fuel mixture burning at the discharge end has a portion of the nascent combustion products leaving at such discharge end recirculated to a region just below the venturi throat e.g. through enclosed channels 40 at the exterior of the heat resistant refractory or stainless steel block 13 in which the venturi passage is provided. and thence through ducts 41. The recirculated products heat the incoming air and revaporize any liquid drops that may have formed. The nozzle is carried on a fuel pipe 11 which is axially adjustable to vary the position of the nozzle, and so of the flame, for different fuels; thus for light vaporizing fuel the nozzle may be raised to such an extent that none of the combustion products is recirculated. The refractory block 13 with its recirculating passages 40 is surrounded by a heat resistant cylinder 42 with a frusto-conical cowl 43 overlying the radially inner side of the recirculation passages whereby a portion of the nascent combustion products is deflected for recirculation. The burner is mounted from the floor 49 of the furnace by a construction comprising steel cylindrical rings 53, 54 apertured for hit-andmiss regulation of primary air to the venturi passage and steel rings 24, 58 for similar regulation of secondary air. A muffle cylinder 48 surrounds the burner. Steam may be used for the atomization. A modification (Fig. 3, not shown) has only one air admission and angularly set vanes impart a whirl to the entering air.
