773,171. Smoke consuming. KWIATKOWSKI, W. J. June 29, 1955, No. 18805/55. Class 51 (1). In the smoke consuming apparatus shown in Fig. 1, which comprises a cylindrical metal chamber C incorporated in the outlet flue of a furnace, the smoke enters at the bottom and is caused by partitions P to flow in a sinuous path towards the register-controlled outlet at the top, the combustible particles therein being burnt through the supply of liquid or gaseous fuel via the burners B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>, and the supply of compressed air through the injectors A<SP>1</SP>, A2, A3. In a modified apparatus only one burner B<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, is used, air being supplied through injectors A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, the supply tube to the former being coaxial with the burner tube. In a further modification, a burner B<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, and an air injector A<SP>1</SP> are arranged concentrically with a constriction C<SP>1</SP>, the gaseous mixture within the chamber above the burner being made to swirl by suitably arranged air jets A<SP>2</SP> supplied from a jacket J around the chamber such that the air is preheated. In yet two further modifications similar to that shown in Fig. 3 a nest of tubes is arranged in the chamber above the jets A<SP>2</SP> in one modification, the tubes being coaxial, whilst in the other they are arranged side-by-side. In the apparatus of Fig. 4 the air jets A<SP>2</SP>, suitably arranged to effect swirling of the gases, are supplied from a pipe P<SP>1</SP> which extends within the chamber such that the air issuing through jets A<SP>2</SP> is preheated. In a modified form of this latter apparatus a helical vane for guiding burning smoke through the chamber surrounds the pipe P<SP>1</SP>. Pulverulent fuel burners may be used in lieu of the gaseous or liquid burners. For burner ignition purposes catalytic or electrical igniters may be employed.
