Abstract
The invention comprises a process for the preparation of alkali metal salts of terephthalic acid by heating alkali metal salts of other aromatic carboxylic acids. The process is carried out in a tube under heat at atmospheric pressure, preferably in the presence of carbon dioxide. The tube contains one or more, preferably two rotatable stirrer blades having their axes of rotation parallel with or the same as that of the tube, and the blade or blades scrape the inner surface of the tube at one or more points. An example is given in which potassium benzoate is heated to about 450 DEG C. in the presence of cadmium chloride, and so converted into potassium terephthalate.ALSO:A tube with means for heating the same under atmospheric pressure and containing one or more, preferably two, rotatable stirrer blades having their axes of rotation parallel with or the same as that of the tube, and the blade or blades scraping the inner surface of the tube at one or more points, is used in the transformation of alkali metal salts of aromatic carboxylic acids other than terephthalic acid into the corresponding salts of terephthalic acid. Two contra rotating stirrer blades, are preferably used and the blades are preferably so positioned that each blade just touches the inner wall of the reactor tube, whilst leaving a small clearance between the two blades when they are at right angles to each other.
