Abstract

763,931. Electrolytic production of titanium tetrahalides. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. June 29, 1953 [July 16, 1952], No. 14989/55. Divided out of 745,051. Class 41. Titanium tetrahalides are produced by electrolyzing a bath of fused alkali or alkaline earth metal (including magnesium) halides using an anode consisting of titanium carbide with which the halogen liberated at the anode reacts to form the tetrahalide. The cell employed may be the same as that in Specification 745,051 except for the anode and the bath heated to 700-1400‹ C. Typically titanium tetrachloride is formed by electrolysis of an equimolar potassium chloride-sodium chloride bath at 700‹ C.
