832,330. Electrical measuring systems; signalling passage of vehicles. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. Sept. 22, 1958 [Sept. 23, 1957], No. 30220/58. Classes 40 (1) and 118 (2). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL (c)] Apparatus for determining the speed of vehicles comprises two microphones, each attached to a wire stretched across a road and feeding an electronic relay which is actuated when the output from the appropriate microphone exceeds a predetermined value and means for determining and recording the interval between the times of operation of each relay. As shown, each microphone M is fitted into a cylindrical holder 26 soldered to a bar 23. The ends of the bar 23 protrude via rubber grommets 24 from a housing 22. Wires T1, T2 are stretched across a road V, the left-hand end of each wire being anchored to one side of the road and the right-hand end to a hook 25. Springs (not shown) are stretched between lugs 27 and the right-hand side of the road. When the front wheels of a vehicle pass over wire T1 a signal is generated by microphone G1 and fed via an amplifier F1 and rectifier K1 to trigger an electronic relay S1 which starts a timer R. When the front wheels pass over the second wire T2 the second electronic relay S2 is similarly operated to stop the timer R. Alternative timers specified comprise means for counting the cycles of a crystal controlled oscillator or a constant speed drum providing a punched card or tape output. The electronic relay S may use a thyratron as in Fig. 3 (not shown), or a transistor bi-stable circuit as. in Fig. 4 (see Group XL (c)).
