Abstract

A process for the heat treatment of polyethylene comprises heating polyethylene having a density of 0.93 to 0.98 at 25 DEG C. and a melt index of 0 to 10, in the substantial absence of oxygen at a temperature of from 300 DEG to 475 DEG C. and for a period of from 10 to 600 seconds in order to raise the value of the melt index. The heating may be carried out in an annular tube connected to an extrusion apparatus or in an enclosed and heated mill which may be operated under nitrogen or other inert gases, under a vacuum or in the presence of a small quantity of air. Solvents may be mixed with the polyethylene to facilitate feeding to the heating apparatus, and after heat treatment the polyethylene may be subjected to a vacuum to remove odour. The product may be extruded into film or piping, may be injection or compression moulded or may be used for coating metal and paper, alone or mixed with paraffin wax.
