Abstract

827,941. Grinding. WINKLER, R., and DUNNEBIER, K. Dec. 12, 1957 [Jan. 26, 1957], No. 38615/57. Class 60. A method of producing openings in paper or like material, such as the windows in window envelopes, consists in guiding the material over protruding edges of the size and shape of the opening and grinding away the material at the places in contact with the edges. In a machine for carrying out the method, the material, which may be in the form of blanks or a web, is fed from a roller B on to a rotatable cylinder A, against which it is pressed by resilient rollers F, G of rubber or other yieldable material disposed adjacent a grinding wheel C. The cylinder A comprises a hollow cylinder 6 on which is fitted a segmental portion 2 and a hollow or perforated block 8 disposed between guides 71 secured at each end of the cylinder 6. A thin steel band 1 or the like, which is approximately 0À1 nun. thick and corresponds in contour to the shape of the opening to be produced, projects edgewise from the portion 2 and is secured thereto by marginal strips 4, 5 and a core 3. The block 8 is disposed with its surface at the same radius as the surface of the guides 7<SP>1</SP> and strips 4, 5 and core 3 securing the band, and is connected to a suction conduit, whereby the drawn through orifices 8a, 8b in its surface assists in holding the envelope material against the cylinder. In operation, the material fed from the roller B is held against the cylinder A as it rotates to periodically bring the steel band into contact with the grinding wheel, which can be adjusted in a direction perpendicular to its axis by a screw 15 and nut 16 controlled through gearing 17 from a handwheel 18, so that the wheel grinds through the material where it contacts the steel band. The waste portions 19 inside the band are blown from the cylinder into a collector H by compressed air fed through orifices 13 to the space confined by the steel band, and the blanks or web of material are carried by a guide roller D to the next operating stage in the production of the envelopes.
