In a hollow gas rail 7 used to supply a number of individually controlled burners, a gas control tap 10 comprising a hollow cock body 13, which accommodates a taper plug 21, is passed into the gas rail through a relatively large opening 11 in one wall thereof and bridges the interior space 16 of the rail so as to be surrounded by gas, and the outlet end of the body is passed through a smaller opening 12 in the opposite wall of the rail where an annular face of a sealing shoulder 14 on the exterior of the body is urged to make a compression seal against an inner face of that wall ; the body projects beyond the opening 12 and has an outlet 9 for connection to a gas burner nozzle or a tube to such a nozzle. As shown, the shoulder 14 is urged against a sealing ring 18 of aluminium or copper and by a nut 19 screwed into the opening 11 and bearing on an annular shoulder 15 of the body 13. The latter has diametrically opposed gas inlet ports 22 which can be aligned with ports 23 in the plug 21 by rotary movement of the plug. The plug has a stem 25 surrounded by a spring 26 and bearing a niting washer 27 which permits relative axial sliding movement between the stem and a hollow spindle 28 carrying a tap-operating knob and rotatable in a nut 29. Radial lugs formed on the washer 27 extend into diametrically opposed slots in the enlarged inner end 31 of the spindle, the larger of the lugs, when the tap is turned off, extending radially into an arcuate slot in the body ; the tap is turned on by pushing in the spindle against the action of the spring so that the lug enters the slot and then rotating the spindle, an adjusting screw 36 abutting against the end of the stem 25 to limit inward movement of the spindle.
