Abstract

827,291. Developing electrostatic images. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 14, 1956 [March 23, 1955], No. 8029/56. Class 98(2) An electrostatic latent image is devel. oped with a mixture of developer powder and magnetic carrier particles applied under the influence of a magnetic field and a unidirectional electric field. As shown in Fig. 1, the latent image is developed on the photoconductive layer 41 by means of developer powder mixed with a magnetic carrier 23 which adheres to a magnet 21 to form a "brush", while a source of potential is connected between the magnet and a backing member 43. A positive or negative image may be obtained by reversing the potential by means of switch 33. In Fig. 2, the xerographic member is in the form of a paper web 51 having a photoconductive coating 53. The latter is given a uniform charge by means of a corona discharge 57, the sign of which charge may be reversed by switch 61. The charged web is exposed at 65 and developed by powder 24 applied by a magnetic brush consisting of a rotating magnetic core 20, connected to an opposite magnetic pole 45, and spaced discs 22 which hold the magnetic carrier 23. An electrical potential is applied between the earthed core 20 and a backing plate 44. The developed image is fixed by a heater 73.
