Abstract

827,224. Turbines. ROTAX Ltd. Jan. 2, 1958 [Jan.14, 1957],No. 1294/57. Class 110(3). A variable area nozzle for an axial flow air or gas turbine comprises a pair of relatively movable plates and at least one pair of nozzle parts secured respectively to a lateral edge of the plates, the nozzle parts being shaped to form a pair of side walls of the required nozzle. A flat annular plate a is secured in the turbine housing at one side of the rotor b and an angularly movable annular plate c, mounted in contact with the plate a, is provided with a lug d by means of which it is moved angularly by a spindle f. A plurality of equispaced quadrilateral apertures are formed in each of the plates a, c, and on one edge of each aperture in the plate a is secured a nozzle part g. To the opposite edge of each of the apertures in the movable part c, is attached a complementary nozzle part h. Variation of the cross-sectional area of the nozzles is effected by angular movement of the plate c relative to the plate a. To maintain the plate c in contact with the plate a, a cylinder k, to which motive fluid is supplied, is provided in the plate a. The cylinder k contains a piston m which acts through levers q, ring n and balls o to maintain the plates a and c in contact with one another.
