Abstract

1,218,356. Air turbines. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 4, 1968 [April 12, 1967], No. 16884/67. Heading F1T. [Also in Divisions F2 and H3/5] An air turbine comprises a rotor assembly 33 which is supported in stator parts 31 by means of air bearings 10, 11. The bearing air gaps 10 and 11 are conical and are supplied with pressurized air by means of a plurality of orifices 38 leading out off an annular manifold 37. Sealing rings 43 stops air escaping from said manifold. Rotor end unit 41 is formed at its periphery with an assembly of turbine blades 47, moved by means of air from a plurality of jets 46 communicating with the manifold 37. A ring valve 48, formed with slots 49 of various lengths, is rotated by means 50 to control the number of jets 46 uncovered and thus the speed of the turbine. Dynamic balance of the rotor unit is established by weights 53.
