Abstract

826,783. Automatic voltage or current control systems. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 19, 1958 [March 19, 1957], No. 8941/57. Class 38(4). In an electrical supply regulator, an output voltage or current is controlled by a power transistor switched on or off by a square-wave signal, the pulsewidth of which is varied bv a network responsive to change in the output voltage or current. An emitter-base circuit of a power transistor 40 is connected in series with a direct voltage input and a smoothing choke 41. A regulated output voltage across terminals 12, 13 feeds a bridge having resistive arms 15, 16 and 17 and a zener diode, 14. An output from the bridge, amplified by transistors 18, 20 feeds a control winding 21 of a magnetic amplifier MA. A transistor oscillator comprising transistors 32, 33 generates a square-wave switching signal of fixed frequency, which supplies the magnetic amplifier through a centre-tapped secondary winding 27, 28 of a transformer 29. The current in the control winding 21 coupled to main windings 22, 23 of the magnetic amplifier pulse-width modulates the square wave current flowing through a resistor 26. The voltage between the base and emitter of power transistor 40 is the sum of a bias voltage, derived from a zener diode chain 38 and the instantaneous voltage across resistor. 26, the power transistor 40 being switched so as to maintain the output voltage constant. A rectifier 42 provides a path for the smoothed load current during the cut-off period of the power transistor. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, an unregulated supply 10, 11 supplies a transistor oscillator 32, 33 through a power transistor 40. The voltage across output terminals 50, 51 is derived from a secondary winding 47 of a transformer 45, fullwave rectified by a bridge, 48. A voltage sensing circuit 52 is connected across the output terminals 50, 51 and the fixed frequency signal to a magnetic amplifier 44 is derived from a secondary winding 46 of transformer 45.
