[Also in Groups XX and XXIX] A press with a movable platen 8 has means 39, 36 for indicating any eccentric loading conditions on the movable platen. The press is preferably an hydraulic forging press whose platen 8 is actuated by a plurality of hydraulic motors 10 arranged in two sets controlled independently by valves 11, 11a both of which are supplied through a main solenoid control valve 12. During operation one or both of the valves 11, 11a may be opened to suit the working pressure required of the platen. Beneath the platen are arranged four double-acting balancing and pull-back motors 13, 14, 15, 16 whose piston rods are connected to the platen and cylinders to the stationary bolster 9. Interconnecting pipes 17, 18, 21, 22 between these motors tend to maintain the platen 8 horizontal. A workpiece W disposed eccentrically between the platens will tend to cause tilting of the platen 8 and consequent movement of fluid in the balancing pipes 17 &c. These pipes are connected through conduits 17a, 18a, 21a, 22a to hydraulic assemblies 45, 46, 47, 48 connected to a tiltable platen 39 of an indicator unit, which platen is thereby caused to tilt in consequence of any tendency to tilt of the main platen 8 but in the opposite direction. Light source 39a on the platen 39 directs a beam of light on a ground glass screen 36 marked with diamondshaped areas 52, 53 for indicating respectively acceptable and critical loading areas. If desired an audible or visible alarm may also be fitted or means may be provided for stopping the press when a dangerous loading condition arises.
