825,471. Magnetic sound recording and reproducing apparatus. PROTONA PRODUKTIONSGESELLSCHAFT FUR ELEKTROAKUSTISCHE GERATE G.m.b.H. April 23, 1958 [April 24, 1957], No. 12868/58. Class 40 (2). The brakes for a tape- or wire-recorder are applied by elastic means such that the braking forces are gradually variable. Separate brakes, acting on the take-up spool or its spindle (and a corresponding pair acting on the other spools during rewind) control stopping and running respectively. The brakes are mounted in pairs, one above the other, on fixed posts, one of which is shown at 2, and are all of the form of Fig. 3, where a flat spiral spring 5 urges a doublearmed lever 4 in a clockwise direction so that the friction member 12 coacts with the spool or its spindle, the frictional force being dependent in amount on the position of the gradually variable adjustable anchorage 5a. This anchorage takes the form of a lug 6c on a gear-wheel 6, which serves also to maintain the components of the assembly coaxial. Two pinions engage respectively the gear-wheel 6 and a corresponding gear-wheel 9 associated with the lever 7 forming part of the other brake. In the embodiment illustrated, one pinion, associated with the lower brake, is actuated by ratchet means (Figs. 2, 4, not shown) located below the tapedeck on the pinion shaft, while the other pinion is actuated by a worm engaging it directly. Two control keys (Fig. 5, not shown) operate switches and also coact with linkages acting on the lever arms such as 4e to release such brakes as are not required to function during any particular manner of operation of the apparatus.
