825,229. Linkwork; converting rotary into reciprocating motion. MILTON ROY CO. Sept. 7, 1956 [Sept. 12, 1955], No. 27519/56. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (3). A variable-stroke mechanism, particularly for the plunger 11, Fig. 1, of a reciprocating pump 13 comprises a driving crank disc 24 on a shaft 23 coupled to the plunger 11 through a connecting rod 25 with ball-joints 54, 55 at its ends. The shaft 23 is rotatably supported in a frame 26 adjustable about a shaft 20, by means of a screw and nut device 34, 35 cooperating with a forked arm 37 of the frame 26, to vary the inclination of the plane of rotation of the crank disc 24. The shaft 23 and the crank disc 24 is driven from the shaft 20 through a worm 21 and wheel 22. With the posts in the position shown with the frame 26 engaging a stop 49 no motion is transmitted to the plunger 11 but as the plane of the crankdisc is inclined by rotating the frame 26 towards another stop 50 a reciprocatory motion is imparted to the plunger 11. A modified coupling, Fig. 15, between the crank-disc 224 and plunger 211 comprises a radial pin 230 secured to an arm 229 on the plunger 211 sliding in a universal bearing assembly 225 on the crank-disc 224. Alternatively the bearing assembly 225 could slidably engage a radial pin direct from the plunger 211. In the last two arrangements the plunger 211 is rotated as well as reciprocated. The adjusting frame may be pivoted about an axis other than that of the driving shaft and is selected so that during the range of stroke variation the forward position of the plunger remains substantially the same.
