Abstract

824,684. Friction clutches. TWIFLEX COUPLINGS Ltd., and FREEMAN, K. J. Nov. 14, 1957 [Nov. 14, 1956], No. 34876/56. Class 80 (2). In a centrifugally engaged clutch for use e.g. between a diesel engine and a compressor, centrifugal shoes 23 are carried by the driven member 12 and operator-controlled pneumatic, hydraulic, electric or mechanical means are provided to move the shoes into contact with a driving drum 10 to initiate drive. The shoes 23 pivot on the driven member 12 through links 19 with rubber bushes at both ends, the torsional resistance of which biases the shoes out of engagement. In Fig. 1, engagement is initiated by supplying pumped fluid pressure to act outwards through pistons 30, levers 33 and spring-returned plungers 35 on two of the four shoes 23. Centrifugal force on the shoes 23 maintains engagement after release of the fluid pressure. If the driven member is stopped, e.g. by jamming, the clutch disengages. In Fig. 4, fluid pressure supplied through a tube 64 and passages 60 acts through a piston 45, cam member 54, balls 52 and plungers 50, 56 to expend the shoes 23 into engagement with the driven drum 10. The shoes 23 are link pivoted, as before, to a member 43 fast on the driven shaft 59 on which the operating cylinder 44 is screwed. According to the Provisional Specification, the torsional resistance of the rubber brushes may bias the centrifugal shoes into engagement, in which case the operator controlled power means retracts the shoes.
