Abstract

824,591. Travelling-wave tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Dec. 24, 1957 [Jan. 24, 1957], No. 40024/57. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(c)] In an M type backward wave travelling wave tube oscillator (having crossed electric and magnetic fields) short pulses are applied between the cathode 13 and an auxiliary anode 15 to unblock the electron beam and broad pulses beginning before and terminating after the short pulses are simultaneously applied to the sole electrode 14 (extending opposite and parallel to the delay line 16 forming the main anode) to produce output carrier pulses. As shown, the broad pulses are derived from a pulse generator 9 and applied with negative going polarity to the sole 14 through a lead 5, and are used for initiating, after a delay in device 11, the shorter pulses from the pulse generator 6 whose negative going polarity pulses are applied to the cathode through a transformer 7 and lead 3. In a modification the broad pulses are applied to the cathode 13 and sole 14 connected in common and short positive going pulses are applied to the auxiliary anode 15 through lead 4. The carrier frequency is dependent on and adjustable by varying the amplitude of the broad pulses applied to the sole electrode. Specifications 751,034, 753,688 and 781,208 are referred to.
