Abstract

824,256. Brazing. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO. Ltd. Sept. 20, 1956 [Sept. 20, 1955], No. 26887/55. Class 83 (4). In brazing parts of high melting point metals such as tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum or titanium, under non-oxidizing conditions, powered chromium boride is employed as the brazing material. The chromium boride is applied to the interfaces of the parts as a suspension in water or alcohol and brazing is effected at 1550-1700‹ C. in hydrogen, inert gas or vacuum or in conditions in which oxygen and nitrogen are excluded from the interfaces during heating, pressure being applied to the parts during heating. Brazing may take place in a bell jar containing the non-oxidizing atmosphere using a thin-walled cylinder of high melting point metal or graphite disposed inside an induction heating coil and surrounding the parts, the cylinder being heated by induction and radiating heat to the parts. Alternatively an argon shielded arc is struck between one of the parts and an electrode, the argon shielding the parts, or the parts may be heated by resistance heating when the interfaces are covered with a volatile liquid, e.g. methylated spirits, to exclude air during heating. Both parts may be of the same metal or one may be of molybdenum and the other of tungsten.
