Abstract

823,799. Heated lagging for pipes. LIPERT, S. Oct. 21, 1957 [Oct. 24, 1956], No. 32444/56. Class 99(2). A lagging for thermally insulating a pipe 11 is in the form of a longitudinally-split openable tube adapted to embrace the pipe, the tube being formed with an internal channel which passes from one end of the tube to the other and is adapted to hold a heating element 15 for the pipe. The two halves of the lagging are covered on their outer surfaces by a common layer of flexible material 14, such as a textile material which serves as a hinge joining the two halves and projects beyond the free edge of one of the halves so that it may be lapped over and secured to the other half. The textile material may be provided with an adhesive inner surface on its free end. While the layer 12 may commonly be of asbestos the layer 13 is often made of a fibrous material which if subjected to too high a temperature could be made to smoulder or ignite. A U-section shield 18 is provided which separates the heater element from the layers 12 and 13. This shield is of highly thermally insulating incombustible material and is preferably a U-section strip of woven fibre glass material.
