Abstract
823,604. Increasing frictional contact. NATIONAL ALUMINATE CORPORATION. Jan. 9, 1956 [Jan. 26, 1955; Sept. 8, 1955], No. 669/56. Class 80 (1). The frictional contact between two metal surfaces is increased by applying to at least one of the surfaces, for example, a railway rail 1, a thin coating 3 of colloidal, silica in discrete particle form and having an average particle size within the range of 1-150 millimicrons. The colloidal silica may be derived from silica solutions, colloidal silicates or the hydrolysed organic esters of silicic acid and may be applied in the form of a solution, a gel, or paste, powder, or stick form by utilizing suitable binders. In addition to improving the frictional contact between the wheels of a locomotive and its rails the invention can also be applied to improving the frictional contact between a metal shaft and a sheave, gear or pinion frictionally mounted thereon or between bolts and locknuts.
