Abstract

822,083. Moulding refractory materials. KNAPF, S. G. April 5, 1957 [April 30, 1956], No. 11150/57. Classes 22 and 87(2). Refractory materials are made by compressing in a mould chamber a uniform finely-divided particle mixture composed of (i) a high melting temperature and relatively inert component, (ii) a reducing metal component, and (iii) a metallic compound component chemically-and: exothermically reducible by reaction with compone n t (ii) to form a high melting compound, namely a metal oxide, carbide or nitride ; passing electric current through the mixture while being compressed to heat it to a temperature at which the exothermic reduction will occur ; then further heating the mixture by current passage to at least maintain the temperature resulting from the exothermic heating ; and finally cooling the resulting integrated product. More specifically, component (i) is of the class consisting of metal oxides, carbides, and nitrides and carbon with a melting temperature in excess of 2000‹C. ; component (ii) is of the class consisting of zirconium, magnesium, and aluminium; and component (iii) is of the class consisting of the anhydrides of chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, and boron ; the carbonyles of chromium, tungsten and molybdenum ; and the cyanides of calcium, nickel and iron. The initial mixture, which contains by weight 20 to 70%, 10 to 40%, and 20 to 40% respectively of the three components and in which the particles are predominately within the 20 to 400 micron size, is heated under a pressure of 2 to 15 tons /sq. in. in a mould chamber 10 having a bottom removable plug 15, walls 11, 13 lined with ceramic 16, and an upper piston 17 to which the compressive force is applied. Cooling elements 22, 24 engage walls 11, 13 and plug 15 and piston 17 have cooling fluid circulated through passages 28. The temperature of the mixture is brought quickly up to 1200‹C. at which exothermic reaction of components (ii) and (iii) occurs, heating being continued and the temperature rising to 1200‹ to 1800‹C. Component (iii) is converted to one or more fluid constituents, gaseous or liquid, e.g. chromium, anhydride, carbon monoxide or nitrogen, which diffuse uniformly throughout the entire mass. Because of the high current passing through the mass and its high temperature, the diffused constituents are highly reactive and convert the metal component to one or more high melting temperature compounds, i.e. oxide, carbide, or nitride as a high temperature resistant binder in the final product. Such conversion is made to occur more completely by continuing the temperature rise to a level that may range as high as 2300‹C. by suitable adjustment of the current flow.
