821,714. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING Ltd. Oct. 3, 1957 [Oct. 19, 1956], No. 31895/56. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group V] A method of making an axially-compressible sealing element for use between relatively rotatable parts 4, 7, Fig. 1, comprises moulding a tubular blank A, Fig. 2, of synthetic plastic or other suitable plastic material having a wear-resistant end surface 1 adjoining a portion of resilient material, and mechanically working the latter portion to form a bellows 2. The blank A may be, as shown in Fig. 2, produced by a moulding process in which a portion B of a mixture of polytetrafluoroethylene and a reinforcing material, such as glass, metal powder or porous carbon, is first inserted into the mould, followed by a portion C of pure polytetrafluoroethylene and finally by a further portion D of the former reinforced mixture. The sandwich material is then moulded and sintered and the blank is finally machined to form the bellows 2, the sealing surface 1A and a groove 3A. In the sealing application, as shown in Fig. 1, the finished element is clamped to the shaft 4 by a ring 5 engaging in the groove 3A and the sealing surface 1A is urged into contact with a seating ring 6 mounted in a stuffing box 7 by a spring 8 enclosed in a protective sheath 9. Alternatively, the sealing element may be stationary and make sealing contact with a member fixed to the shaft.
