888,118. Stuffing-box substitutes. HILLMAN Ltd., J. & A., and HILLMAN, J. L. March 24, 1960 [June 24, 1959], No. 21757/59. Class 122 (5). A side-face seal for use between relatively rotatable parts comprises a hard sealing ring 1, e.g. a carbon ring, incorporated in a rubber &c. diaphragm 2 integral with a sleeve 3 reinforced by a helical spring comprising a portion 7 of tightly-wound abutting coils that engages the interior of the sleeve and a compressible portion 8 that exerts a resilient thrust on the ring. The sleeve may be pressfitted in a stationary machine part 5 and its interior may be grooved to accommodate the coils 7.
