820,645. Magnetic storage devices. FERRANTI Ltd. Oct. 11, 1956 [Oct. 15, 1955], No. 30932/56. Class 38 (2). A magnetic storage device for digital computors comprises a ring core of ferrite material having a square hysteresis loop provided with input, output, and shift pulse windings and also provided with a heater for raising the temperature of the core at will. The heater may comprise a resistance wire or a hot fluid bath and may serve a number of cores. Impulses 19 on the input winding indicate binary digits 1, whilst no input at the predetermined time interval indicates 0. A train of shift pulses 20 are provided in such a direction as to reverse the flux in the core due to the pulses 19, and hence to provide output pulses 21 corresponding to the digit 1 and no pulse to indicate 0. The output winding is provided with a diode rectifier 18. The raising of the temperature improves performance by reducing the time taken for the flux to be reversed in the core.
