Abstract

A catalyst for the polymerization of pure ethylene is formed by mixing an organic compound of aluminium, magnesium or zinc with a compound of a Group IVa, Va or VI metal in a molecular ratio between the limits of 0.3 to 1 and 8 to 1. The catalysts are formed out of contact with the atmosphere and may be those disclosed in Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 801,031. The pure ethylene used may be obtained by previously washing contaminated ethylene with an organic compound of aluminium, magnesium or zinc. The Specification discloses particular molecular ratio ranges and provides drawings illustrating their maximum effect on molecular weight, for various particular catalyst combinations.ALSO:Polyethylene of a predetermined degree of polymerization is produced by polymerization of pure ethylene with a catalyst formed by mixing an organic compound of aluminium, magnesium or zinc with a compound of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal in a molecular ratio between the limits of 0.3 to 1 and 8 to 1. The catalysts are formed out of contact with the atmosphere and may be those disclosed in and may be used in the processes described in Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 801,031. The pure ethylene used may be obtained by previously washing contaminated ethylene with an organic compound of aluminium, zinc or magnesium. In the examples, the diesel oil medium is also purified by distilling over sodium. The Specification discloses particular molecular ratio ranges and provides drawings illustrating their maximum effect on molecular weight, for various particular catalyst combinations.
