Abstract

819,628. Automatic control systems. FORMBY & CO. Ltd., J. Sept. 23, 1955, No. 5007/58. Class 38 (4). In a tape-transport apparatus the catenary formed by an opaque tape suspended between a supply spool and a driving means is detected by two beams of light which influence photoelectrically-operated switch means controlling an electromagnetic clutch in the spool drive so as to maintain the catenary between limits defined by the two beams of light. When a sprocket 27, rotating clockwise, feeds data tape past an erase head 59 and a recording or repro ducing head 26, the catenary formed by the tape at the left-hand side of the sprocket is shortened until a beam of light from a source 53 falls on a photo-cell 55. The response of the photo-cell fires a thyratron 57 and current through the latter operates a clutch 47 to cause the supply spool 45 to be driven against the resistance of a light brake 58. When the lower tip of the catenary obscures the beam of light from a source 52 the response of a second photo-cell 54 fires a thyratron 56 which quenches the thyratron 57 and so disengages the spool drive. Similarly, a take-up spool is started when the right-hand catenary obscures the beam from source 52 to a photo-cell 54a, and is stopped when a photo-cell 55a responds to light from the source 53. Specification 817,321, [Group XXXVIII], is referred to.
